    Binion's Horseshoe Club History:
Is it Binion's?  Binion's Horseshoe?  Horseshoe Club?  The current name at 128 E. Fremont Street is "Binion's Gambling Hall & Hotel".  Its name reflects the founder Benny Binion whose family ran it from 1951 - 2004.  Benny Binion purchased the Eldorado Club and Hotel Apache in 1951 and renamed it Binion's Horseshoe. Sons Jack and Ted were involved in the casino and wife Teddy Jane kept the books.
However, from 1953 to 1957, Benny served time in prison for tax evasion and the majority shares of the property were sold to Joe W. Brown.  It was widely known that Brown was only the caretaker until Benny could regain interest.  At that time, the
Horseshoe was known as Joe W. Brown's Horseshoe.
In 1960, Binion's purchased the neighboring Boulder Club and in 1988, the Mint was acquired, giving Binion's Horseshoe an entire block on Fremont Street.
When Benny passed away in 1989, son Jack continued to run the Horseshoe until 1998, when in a dispute with sister Becky, he surrendered control of the casino.  In 2004, after disputes, legal issues, and payments due to the union, a court order was issued and over ,000,000 was seized from the Horseshoe casino cage to satisfy the debts.  This effectively depleted the Horseshoe's bankroll and it was forced to close.  Within weeks, the Horseshoe was sold to Harrah's and then sold to MTR Gaming Group.  In 2008, the hotel and casino were sold to TLC Casino Enterprises which also owns the Four Queens.
    Who was Benny Binion?
Lester Ben Binion (1904-1989) was a gambling icon, career criminal, and convicted murderer.  He was born and raised in Texas where his parents kept him out of school because of poor health.  He never had any formal education.  He learned how to gamble at a young age as he travelled with his father who was a horse trader.  In his young adult years, Benny began moonshining in the Dallas area and was convicted twice for that crime.  He was also convicted of shooting and killing a man but only received a two year suspended sentence. By 1936, Benny had gained control of most of the gambling operations in Dallas and had protection from a powerful local politician.  Binion killed a competitor but the indictment was dismissed on grounds that he acted in self defense.  In 1938, Binion was accused of murdering another competing gambling racketeer and again the charges were dropped. By the early 1940's Benny was the reigning mob boss of Dallas and started moving into the Fort Worth area. After World War II, however, Chicago mobs moved into Dallas and Binion lost his political influence in the Sheriff's office and fled to Las Vegas.
In Las Vegas, Binion became a partner of the Las Vegas Club casino for a short time.  In 1951, Benny purchased the Eldorado Club and the Apache Hotel, obtained a gaming license, and renamed it Binion's Horseshoe.  After his tax evasion conviction, Benny lost his gaming license and served 5 years in federal prison.  Benny was never allowed to hold a gaming license again. Son Jack became the licensee and Benny assumed the title of Director of Public Relations.  His office was a booth in the restaurant downstairs. In Las Vegas, he was known as an innovator and a generous business man.

    Fun Fact #5
:  Joe W. Brown first brought the famous encased horseshoe with ,000,000 to the casino in 1954.  It was sold in 1959 and Benny recreated it in 1964 using 100 ,000 bills.  Becky sold it in 1999 to a private collector.  In 2008 it was recreated again, this time with 2,700 0 bills, 34,400 bills, and 42,000 bills.
